Description
This lesson plan provides ideas for teaching about noun groups, particularly the use of qualifiers to postmodify nouns. It is based on the picture book Words That Taste Like Home by Sandhya Parappukkaran and Michelle Pereira. This book uses embedded clauses to modify (further describe) several nouns, a key descriptive feature that lends itself to an inquiry into noun groups.
This lesson plan meets the Australian Curriculum: English Version 9 outcomes for Year 2 to Year 5.
The lesson plan includes:
- A planned exploration
- Modelling prompts
- A group shared experience
- Suggestions for independent practice.
- A noun exploration game called “Noun Trains”
- A template for publishing student noun group work.
This lesson plan is based on a Gradual Release of Responsibility Model and the Teaching and Learning Cycle of deconstructing and reconstructing texts. This lesson is perfect for a workshop approach to teaching writing.
